5 Questions to Ask Employees Before Ordering their New Work Desks

Whether you’ve just hired a new employee or you’re updating your office furniture, selecting the right work desk can be a daunting task. After all, you’re buying furniture for another person, and their tastes may differ from yours.
A high quality work desk like the ones at Stuart David will last for many years in your office space, but it’s important to make sure it suits your employee’s needs and allows them to work efficiently. A properly selected desk will make the purchase a worthy investment when your employees are comfortable and at ease in their workspace.
Before visiting Stuart David online or coming out to our showroom to purchase a work desk or computer table, you should ask your employees these five questions:
1. What do they like and dislike about their current desk?
Asking your employees their current likes and dislikes will give you greater insight into their preferences. You may discover that they dislike the shape of their corner desk, or wish that they had more usable surface space. Listening to your employees’ current concerns will help to ensure you’re making the most appropriate purchase for them.
2. How will the new desk be used?
Everyone uses his or her desk differently, so it’s important to learn how your specific employee plans to use theirs. Will it be used solely as a place to house a computer, or used to draft up drawings or file paperwork? There are different types of desks for every work situation, so you’ll always be able to find the perfect fit as long as you know what you’re looking for.
3. What is their work style?
People are unique, and everyone has a different method of working. Some employees thrive in chaos, and prefer to keep everything on top of their desks within reach, while others prefer to have dedicated spaces for their belongings to stow them away neatly. If your employee won’t use storage drawers, it’s important to know ahead of time, that way you don’t waste money on unused space.
4. How often will they be at their desk?
If your employee rarely sits at their desk during the day, it won’t need to be as thought out and planned as someone who spends his or her entire day at one. They may only require a small computer station versus a grand, L-shaped desk. Learning how often they will actually be using the desk can save you money and allow you to spend more on employees who actually need proper desk space.
5. Would they prefer to sit or stand most of the day?
If your employees are concerned about the amount of time they’re sitting at their desk, you may want to consider a standing option. Some desks can be adapted to work both sitting and standing, allowing for more flexibility and less need for employees to walk away from their desks to stretch their legs, increasing their productivity.
Asking your employees these questions before running out and making a preemptive purchase will ensure you’re getting the most for your money. The right work desk or computer table will pay for itself over time when your employees are content, comfortable, and able to work at their most efficient.
