How to Choose a Coffee Table that is Both Practical and Beautiful
Michael Richards

The 1990s are making a comeback this summer. That’s because Hulu, the online video provider, is newly streaming all nine seasons of the decade’s smash hit comedy, Seinfeld.

Seinfeld - a “show about nothing” - features a quirky cast of four single friends – Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer – trying to survive common daily hassles on New York’s Upper West Side.
The most flamboyant member of the cast is “Cosmo Kramer,” portrayed by comedian Michael Richards(photo).

Kramer - as he is universally known - became a cult icon when the show originally aired, thanks to fanciful story arcs, such as the one revolving around coffee tables – or more precisely, a coffee table book… about coffee tables.

In Seinfeld’s fifth season, the ever-enterprising Kramer writes a coffee table book about coffee tables that folds out to become an actual coffee table. Eventually, Kramer sells the movie rights to his book and achieves financial independence.

Your own handmade, solid-wood coffee table can enjoy a star turn in your living room when you follow these easy steps for selecting and accessorizing your Emmy-worthy coffee table from Stuart David Home Furnishings, with a factory showroom in Ceres just south of Modesto.

As is the case with all of Stuart David Home Furnishing’s living room furniture , our American-made coffee tables are available in a wide choice of styles, woods, stains, and hardware - providing the perfect blend of beauty and function.

Sizing is crucial. A coffee table should not be taller than the height of the seat cushions surrounding it, or it will become a visual distraction.

If you select a table that is too large, it will create an obstacle course in the center of your living room and may visually overpower other design elements, such as a Persian rug or antique throw.

If your table does not have enough surface area, it loses much of its utility. Consider how you’re likely to utilize the table: Do you need enough space to support a board game for the kids; an overflow of plates, glasses, and cuisine when entertaining; or merely a vase and some family photos?

When selecting a coffee table, you want to be able to visualize exactly where it will fit in your living room. Before making a purchase, measure the area. One tip is to actually mark off the space with painter’s tape so you can best visualize the table’s influence on the room’s aesthetics and judge for yourself how it feels to maneuver your way around the table area.

When partnering with Stuart David Home Furnishings to custom design your coffee table, consider the existing feel of your room. You’ll want your new table to complement other furniture, wall coverings and decorations; including lighting, artwork and other accessories.

If you’re inclined to adorn your coffee table with particular accents, you might consider bringing them along to our showroom to ‘test drive’ our display tables.

You also need to consider how your table will get along with two, often-destructive, household adversaries: children and animals. Some of our decorative options, such as glass top tables, may not be compatible with kids who are prone to bang their toys on your living room furniture.

On the other hand, adding storage drawers and cupboards to your coffee table is an excellent way to stash games, crayons, and coloring books. Selecting a lower shelf for your coffee table provides additional space for a wicker basket or another bin than can hold kid-friendly items.

Kids and pets that race around your living room – sometimes chasing one another – will inevitably collide with your coffee table. Selecting a round or oval design will limit potential injuries from square edges to both two-legged and four-legged family members. Those edges, by the way, often get banged up by the kids and pets in turn.  Along the same lines, a table where the top lifts up and down can be a hazard to toddlers’ tiny fingers and pet tails.

You may wish to also consider the potential for injury posed by square edges to less-agile elderly family members and visitors.

A lift-top coffee table makes for a great way to eat or play a board game without having to bend over to reach for things, since the top comes up and over towards you. A lift-top coffee table also makes for lovely way to display or store coasters, candies and chocolates, tea napkins, card decks, and the like.

If you entertain frequently, you may want to select two identical rectangular tables. These can be placed side-by-side when you need more combined surface area for platters, beverages, and such; then separated again once the guests have gone home. Another advantage of using two smaller tables rather than one large table is the flexibility it provides should your party require all available floor space. Smaller tables are easier to store temporarily out of the way than one large coffee table.

You can accessorize your coffee table with a myriad of styles and inspirations. Scented candles and tasteful candleholders are a perennial favorite. What a special ambience is created by the reflection of the flames off your shimmering all-wood coffee table!

To mark the changing seasons and holidays, let your coffee table serve as the heart of your celebration. Fresh white flowers and seashells arranged in a ceramic or glass dish convey a nautical look during spring and summer. Fall and winter can be commemorated with mini pumpkins, scented pines, and a clay nativity scene or wooden dreidel set. A chessboard is a year-round classic.

And wouldn’t Cosmo Kramer be miffed if we overlooked the most obvious decorative coffee table accent: Books?

Whatever your interests, there is a lavishly illustrated, design-compatible coffee table book for you and your living space. Yes, life does imitate art. If you’re so inclined, Amazon.com and other major booksellers do, indeed, offer a coffee table book on coffee tables.

Now that Seinfeld reruns are available on demand from Hulu, you’ll definitely want to carve out time this summer to plop down on your most comfortable living room seat and binge watch episodes of the show about nothing, all while sipping from a glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and munching from a plate of home-baked cookies or other snacks that sit regally on your very own Stuart David Home Furnishings coffee table.

A little self-indulgent?  Perhaps.  But as Jerry and George would say, it’s “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”
